10/21/2017 0 Comments Still life with PumpkinsEvery term I like to set up a stilll life for my ArtspacePainting and Drawing students. This year I was happy to include my pumpkin haul from my family's trip to the Pumpkin patch. Well to be honest it was only part of the haul. Since I'm a transit taking pedestrian I couldn't bring the other two slightly smaller pumpkins if I wanted the use of my upper limbs for hte rest of the day.
My paintng and drawing students range in age from five to eight and every time a set up a still life I am positively blown away by the drawings these children create. I have some pretty amazing art up on the wall and I'm hoping to get a good photograph to share it here. In the meantime I've included a couple of shots of the still life I set up and some in process shots by a selction of the students in the class. When I set up a still ife with children we always have the same introductionary talk. The rules for a still life are that we never touch the set up. to move an item while everyone is drawing is to change what is front of the artists. you're changing what is in front of them and what they have already drawn is no linger what is in front of them. While this is an interesting drawing exercise in itself for this age range it's challenging enough to just look at the set up and draw what they see. It's interesting to see the transition of the children drawing the idea of what is up on the table (there is a pumpkin there I will draw what a pumpkin is ther is a cup and saucer and i will draw a cup shape) to drawing what they are observing (that pumpkin in the front sits in a corner of cloth that is a little to the left of that first ridge in the pumkin's skin). I always have at least one student who is starting to notice that what they are seeing isn't what they are drawing. My job is to guide them towards the next stage of seeing the shapes and how they relate to each other and trnaslating that onto their paper while making sure that they know that they are making a good piece of artregardless of their skill level. if you look at the middle drawing in the gallery above you can see that my student is starting to transition from drawing the idea of what was included in the still life. The idea drawing is still there but they are starting to include details that they are seeing in the set up. The pumpkin is still a pumpkin shape but the position of the stem tells me that they are seeing how the pumkin was placed at an angle. This is one of my favourite drawings from the class. 10/14/2017 0 Comments and a month went byThose who know me, know that my schedule is crammed full. Those who know me a little bit better also know that I don't have one of those new fangled laptop computers just a desktop jobbie that's a little slow. those that know even better have often hear me curse a blue streak at the inability of my smart phone and tablet to properly post on my webpage. Grr Argh!
In the last few weeks I've participated in a wonderful yearly art event; Living Room Art in the Heights 2017 (if you stopped by to say hello you have big gratitude thoughts headed in your direction.) If you missed it you can stop by the North Burnaby Neighbourhood House to look at some of the art that was displayed at LRAH2017. I've taught my regular classes (and a few extras (hello Pro D camps!) at Artspace and Muckabout. I've created a line of handcrafted witch hat fascinators and a class to go along with it (register at Muckabout for the spirited Witch and Stitch night, or sign your kids up for the young people's version to make your own). I've created a stormy window display at Muckabout Gift Gallery (well have a display the other half is on the way). I've finished a new set of watercolour painting kits. I've cleaned the counters off in my kithchen (this is a huge job. you have no idea. Unless you're one of those people who know me really well) had family photos, taken the bigger of my small ones to her appointments and therapy sessions for her ASD and attended her IEP meeting. Made sure the smallest of my small ones has had clean clothes and enough to eat. AND made time to get some art finished for the upcoming show this december. I should also mention that I've caught a cold. I'm headed into week two of sinus headaches, dry cough and hoarse voice. What I haven't been able to get to is this page; so I've carved out a monent of time before I head into work, drop the smallest of my small ones off at her dance class and get ready for another week. On the docket is the getting together of the halloween costumes for my small ones. this year we are being Doctor Who (newly regenerated into the latest incarnation) and a Quail. Wish me all of the luck. |
