9/23/2017 0 Comments Leaves an impressionIt's a cliché to start off fall term art classes with leaf themed art but I can't help myself. In the past I've done rubbings, tracing, stamping and collage leaf projects and I've been happy with them. Very happy because my students (usually preschoolers) do amazing things with the techniques I show them. This year I decided to try a slightly different leaf lesson. It's so beautiful I'm already planning a journal page with liquid watercolours. Keeping in line with seasonal themes my painting and drawing students at Artspace did some phenomenal chalk pastel work drawing from the carrot seed heads and sage flowers I've cut from my garden and some interesting weeds I've left to grow and feed my bees. There are at least six things from the drawings they made that I want to imitate. I'm settling in with my independent students; finding a balance between creating a disciplined creative practice and allowing my students to play and find their voice. These lessons also keep me on my toes problem solving and creating lesson plans to fit the interest of my students. Currently we're exploring printmaking techniques but I decided to switch things up and set up a still life for them to draw yesterday using more fall themed objects. It's nearing the end of the month and new workshops on Thursdays at Muckabout are online. I'm offering a bookmaking mini term in October. I'll be teaching some simple books from zine making (handmade magazines) to a simple binding with a hard cover and a few others in between. The mini term is a four week term that ends in November since the second Thursday of October has been booked for a mini hat tutorial for kids. The dates and times can be found on Muckabout's website. The witch and stitch for kids workshop is a fun after school workshop that ends with a wearable mini hat to use as a costume or in dress up play. And because I've been on a hat making frenzy I'm also offering a Witch and Stitch spirited ladies night. We'll create a charming witch hat fascinator that can be worn as a subtle costume come Halloween or as part of a more elaborate costume. I've been building a selection of veiled fascinator hats to sell in Muckabout. On top of that I'm participating in Burnaby's annual Living Room Art in the Heights on the 30th of September. I'll be doing an interactive artist trading cards project complete with a live trade during the event. I'll also have some work on display that night too. It's a free event that coincides with Culture Days and is full of the work of some great local artists and performers. If you haven't already signed up for the mailing list now would be a great time. Not only will I be posting news about upcoming events and works in progress but I'll be including a little extra something in the next mail out; special for subscribers only!

And I can't forget to let you know about the Living Room Art in the Heights How was your first week of September? It's the last long weekend of summer and school here starts on Tuesday. Over the course of the summer we've managed to lose two lunch bags, and damage one backback beyond redemption (there is no coming back from amold filled front pocket. We're back to school shopping sometime in the next two weeks and will be replacing those bags and adding any extras that need topping up. We're headed into school year schedule with wake up times and afterschool activities. We're back into lunch menus, homework and playdates. and that's just the small ones. For me I'm finishing off my lesson plans. I've added a painting and drawing lesson at Artspace and working on lessons for my new independant lessons at Muckabout. I'm quite excited about all of the lessons and looking forward to all the great works. I'm also looking forward to learnign a few new things this fall especially the bookmaking. The images that illustrate the tops of this site are from my most recent book work The bookmaking course I'm leading is a great partner to the Art Journal Drop ins I co teach and I'm super excited to see how the two will change my own work.
