If you're a Supernatural fan the title of this blog might jingle a bell or two. I've always liked their use of the phrase to catch the audience up on what's happened before. Since I'm also on my own journey this year I'm going to use that phrase too. If you've been following me on facebook and instagram you've likely seen updates as they have happened. Thanks for chjecking in by the way. A little feedback inteh form of views and likes helps with to keep me motivated especially as the Mid-winter blues kick in. I've created one mini zine per week so far this month. each booklet is one of a kind. I've included some text in two of them. The first was a simple collection of doodles done in red pen. I liked the lines and flow that the doodles created and it was a fun little book to meditate on. I say meditate because I often find creating patterns in a doodle to be a meditative process. I choose patterns, shapes and how they are filled in based on intuition and what I find pleasing without stopping to analyze those choices. That first mini zine was created to jump start the whole process and I wanted to make something that would be successful without needing a lot of energy. And really the whole process of creating a weekly mini book or zine is meant to be an exercise in creating a successful piece. The second book was also a folded booklet. The text and book were created while I was on hold. The recorded words would play periodically in between sporadic recorded music and periods of dead air that had me questioning if I was actually on hold or if my call had dropped. Just as I would start to feel my anxiety rise the voice would come on thanking me for my continued patience. I was on hold long enough to create teh book, write the text and shade in the areas to represent that dead air. I used artistic licence to imply that there was no music played at any point in my time waiting. The third book came from some scraps of paper used in creating some of the practice books I've been making this week. I've been enjoying a little earworm infection lately. Sometimes earworms can create an annoying loop of a song that you can't wait to get rid of. This time I've been pleased to find a new song to add to my studio play list. I'm not quite tired of it yet which is not always the case with an earworm. The book is simple handwritten text describing the ear worm phenomina from my point of view. Each book is an accomplishemnt; a finsihed product that I can look at as a group as they accumulate. This project is so multifaceted that it would be easy to lose interest over time because there is "nothing" to show for all the time and energy spent until the end. The Mini-zines will spur me on to make the biiger works. The overall goal of this process is to create art books. Books that are handcrafted and filled with artworks. This isn't a do it in an afternoon process. I've spent the last two weeks practicing one type of binding process. I've created a handful of small pocket journals while going through this process to perfect the bindings. I'll likely spend another week creating more books with this process with blank pages and different patterned bindings while I start to focus on a finished art book. That focus will start with a focus on creating a collection of art pieces to fit into the finished book. I will spend some time makeing some key decisions: dimensions, theme, subject, text, lettering, colour palette. A lot of boxes to tick off and consider. I'll be creating a number of video files while i'm in the studio so I thought I'd create a Youtube channel to upload them. (What's another platform to learn and master after all?) I'll be linking the videos here but I also encourage you to subscribe to my feed there too.
